Etymology

From the United States Army acronym "Absent Without Leave"

Adjective

1. (Mil. and generic) Absent without leave (permission).

   The US Army has a lot of AWOL soldiers.

Noun

1. (Mil.) The status of being absent from the command and control of a military organization without being placed on leave, detached to another unit, or otherwise receiving official sanction for an absence
2. (Mil.) A person who holds AWOL status.
3. (generic) Somebody who is absent without permission.

Usage

The United States Marine Corps uses the term "UA" (Unauthorized Absence) instead of "AWOL".
