daimyo ( 大名 )

  1. a feudal lord in Japan that was served by samurai and controlled a certain area of land. They were accountable to more powerful daimyo (especially the shogun) and the Emperor of Japan (tenno or mikado) himself. They were consolidated into han in the Edo period and eventually the title was disbanded during the Meiji Era.
