Pronunciation

Noun

owl (owls )

  1. A carnivorous bird, similar to a falcon, and primarily nocturnal, though the degree of day activity varies highly among various members of the species. Has forward-looking, binocular vision, but limited eye movement. This is compensated for by a high degree of head rotation (270 degrees) and extremely powerful hearing. Size ranges from that of North America's Great Horned Owl, with a wingspan of 4 1/2 feet, to America's Elf Owl, at 3 3/4 inches in total length.
  2. A message. This meaning is common among the fans of the Harry Potter book series in which owls are used to deliver mail.
He received an urgent owl from the Ministry of Magic.
