Vehicle Identification Number

1.  : a mandatory unique number assigned to each vehicle produced, stamped into the metal on the dashboard on the driver's side (viewable through the windshield), on the engine block and at least one other place somewhere on the body of the vehicle.

The "number" is not numeric, but composed of letters and numbers. Usually 17 digits/characters.
