AMule

In computing, aMule is a peer-to-peer file sharing application that works with the eDonkey computer network, but offers more features than the standard eDonkey client. It is a fork of the xMule sourcecode, which itself is a fork of the lMule project, which was the first attempt to bring the eMule client to Linux. It is now the Linux client on the eMule links section on their webpage. Like eMule, aMule is Free software released under the GNU General Public License.

The stated goal of aMule is to be the "all-platform emule", with current support for Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD and Solaris Operating Environment. A port to Windows is planned.

Since the start of the project as a non-friendly fork of the xMule project, there has been continued animosity between the developers and supporters of both projects.

The GPL-compliance of the aMule project has been discussed several times, mainly in response to complains from the only xMule developer left after the fork. However, recent contacts with the FSF from the aMule creator cleaned it up to the point that aMule is fully compliant with the GPL as a whole.
