Academic incest is a term used to describe a situation where a faculty member at a university is also an alumnus of the same institution. The term is most often used when the faculty member has received a doctorate from the university.
Problems
One of the problems with "academic incest" is that the faculty of the university will tend to have the same ideas, and consequently the same errors in their thinking because they have never been exposed to a different scholastic environment.
This is why graduate schools are often harder on their own undergraduate applicants than those from outside the university.
