Arnoldo Alemán
José Arnoldo Alemán Lacayo was born on 23 January 1946, in Managua to an official in the government of Anastasio Somoza García. He was President of Nicaragua from 10 January 1997 to 10 January 2002. CareerHe was a member of the young Somocistas. In 1967 he graduated in law from the National Autonomous University of León . Between1968 and 1979 he worked as a lawyer in the commercial and banking world. In 1980 he was arrested as a counterrevolutionary during the Government Junta of National Reconstruction and spent 9 months in prison. Forbidden to attend the funeral of his father while in prison made Aleman feel resentful towards the Sandinista National Liberation Front, whose party dominated the junta. As soon as he was released he went into voluntary exile in the United States of America. On 7 December 2003 he was sentenced to a 20-year prison term for a string of crimes including money laundering, embezzlement and corruption.
