Belém is an important neighborhood in Lisbon, Portugal, several kilometers from the city's center, the Baixa. It is home to several important monuments, including the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower (or Torre de Belém). The area is also famous for the pastries which originated there and which are now sold across Portugal--the so-called pastéis de Belém ("Belém pastries")--small tarts made of custard.
