Bolingbroke

Bolingbroke, now called Old Bolingbroke, is a village near Boston in Lincolnshire, England. There is another village to the east, called New Bolingbroke

The castle was built by William de Romara , Earl of Lincoln in the 13th century, a classic motte and bailey castle, with a wet ditch, the type of castle stereotyped by Hollywood 700 years later. The castle was acquired by John of Gaunt, the son of Henry III, and John's son Henry, who became Henry IV or Henry Bolingbroke, was born there. It became the scene of a Civil War siege in 1643, as the Royalists used it to garrison troops in prior to the Battle of Winceby, and the last remaining structure fell down in 1815. The site eventually became a grassy hillock, and was excavated by archeologists in the 1970's
