Canoe camping

Canoe camping (also known as canoe touring or canoe tripping), is a complete combination of canoeing and camping. It is similar to backpacking, but canoe campers travel primarily in canoes or other boats. However, portaging by foot is necessary to pass between water bodies or around navigational obstacles such as rapids or waterfalls.

The advantages of this approach over backpacking are that it is easier to travel a greater distance given favorable conditions, and that small watercraft can carry heavier and bulkier loads. Camping and traveling by canoe provides a very different recreational experience than backpacking, often allowing the observation of aquatic and near-shore wildlife. Many people fish while canoe camping.
