Fifty-first United States Congress

The Republican US Congress of 1890 was one of the most important congresses in American history. It passed a record number of significant laws that helped shape later policy and asserted the authority of the federal government to a degree that the country would not then accept. Sensing the public reaction, the Democrats labelled it the "billion dollar congress" for spending that much in appropriations and grants.
