Flatfoot

Flatfoot is a description of foot position using the medial arch as a reference point.

Causes

  • Inherited structural flatfoot
    • May be an insufficiency of ligaments or ligamentous strength
    • May be an articulation genetic mal-placement
    • May be abnormal placement or weakness of the posterior tibial tendon or insertion
  • Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction
    • The tendon normally inserts into the medial navicular supporting the talar head and thus supporting the medial arch of the foot
  • Tarsal coalition
