Henri Louis le Chatelier was an influential chemist of the 19th century (Paris 1850- Miribel-les-Echelles 1936).
He was student at the École polytechnique and at the École des Mines in Paris.
His studies of the principles of chemical equilibrium yielded his famous theory of equilibrium (see Le Chatelier's Principle). He also carried out a lot of research about metallurgy. He was one of the founder of the technical newspaper "la revue de métallurgie".
He was appointed as "chevalier" (knight) of the Légion d'honneur in 1887, became "officier" (officer) in 1908, "commandeur" (Knight Commander) in 1919 and finally "grand officier" (Knight Grand Officer) in 1927.
