Henri Jozef Machiel Nouwen (January 24, 1932 - September 21, 1996) was a Dutch Catholic priest and writer who wrote many devotional books, most famously perhaps The Wounded Healer. His spirituality was influenced by many, notably by his friendship with Jean Vanier. At the invitation of Vanier he joined Daybreak, a Canadian L'Arche Community for people with learning disabilities. Nouwen wrote about his experiences befriending a severely disabled man there, and later died while still living as part of the community.
Nouwen frequently also wrote about his struggles to reconcile his faith with depression and homosexuality.
