Imola

Imola (1991 pop. 62,567) is a town in the Emilia-Romagna region of north-central Italy, most noted as the home of the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari and the Formula One San Marino Grand Prix. The race, named for the nearby principality of San Marino which is itself too small to host a grand prix, is generally referred to by the name "Imola."

The town itself, famous for its ceramics, dates back to Roman times as an agricultural and trade center; it was then known as Forum Cornelii. According to tradition, Saint Cassian of Imola was martyred here during the reign of Julian the Apostate in the 4th century.

It was later ruled by various condottieri, such as the Visconti and the Sforza, from which era several landmark fortresses remain.
