Instruction register

In computing, an instruction register is the part of a CPUs control unit that stores an instruction. The bits of the instruction register are decoded by a microprogram that controls the computer.

Comes into play during a FETCH operation. The Memory Address Register is loaded with contents of Program Counter. Then the memory is interrogated and the contents are stored in Instruction Register by MDR.
