Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is the name of programmes in several countries which provide prepared meals in the home to those unable to prepare them themselves or get out of their home.

In the United States this is a voluntary service provided in many communities. The program began in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1954, and early volunteers were dubbed platter angels. The program often charges a small amount to help recover costs and to ensure seniors a sense of dignity. The program soon expanded to Columbus, Ohio and Rochester, New York.

A similar organisation with the same name exists in the United Kingdom.
