Mellel (hebrew text) is a word processor for Mac OS X, especially suited for technical and academic writers. It is made by RedleX, a small software company from Israel. The company is known for its swift response to user inquiries. New features are added to the program every few months, many of which come from user suggestions.
Mellel's way of handling styles is easier to use and more intuitive than those in mainstream word processors. Its Replace Styles feature, which allows users to reformat vast amounts of text scattered through a document with a few clicks, allows users control over document formatting with unprecedented ease. It also handles languages with non-latin alphabets like Arabic, Hebrew or Korean well due to its support for Unicode and OpenType fonts. Its user interface relies heavily on palettes as found in professional design applications.
Mellel has a unique way to handle footnotes, endnotes and comments; they are handled as different streams of a single text and can also help to keep different translations of the same text in sync.
Mellel provides tight integration with Bookends, a bibliographical tool for managing citations. It has good support for RTF import and export and rudimentary support for .doc files.
Mellel's price is also among the lowest of commercially available word processors. Its main drawback is a steep learning curve; most of its features were designed from the ground up rather than imitating existing word processors, so it can take some time to learn for those more familiar with other programs. Its many loyal users find its features well worth this effort.
