Minitokyo

Minitokyo is a website launched in March, 2004. A community of anime enthusiasts and artists, it serves as a showcase for anime-themed wallpapers, scans, and fan art submitted by its users.

Its creation was mainly in response to an outright ban on Anime-themed wallpapers on the popular art site DeviantART on January 20th, 2004, but also served as an outlet for its creator (known in the community as Sheqel) to practice and improve his web design skills. Since its initial launch, the community has grown from strenth to strength. As of April, 2005, the site has over 90,000 members, and contains over 50,000 gallery items in its database.

The site suffered sporadic slowdowns during the summer of 2004 as a result of server overload (due to popularity), but this was alleviated in the fall with the upgrading of the server hardware.

Recently, the service has added many new features, including customizable user pages, user reviews of anime, and the addition of a groups feature, allowing members to create and join small communities within the Minitokyo network.

Minitokyo has also set up an unofficial chat room on IRC for its members. It is located on the Rizon network, at #minitokyo, and is moderated by several regular members of the site, including several moderators.
