Mon (crest)

Mon (紋) or Kamon (家紋) are Japanese family crests. They are typically enclosed in circle and can be parted into geometrical mon, plant-inspired mon (such as the Tokugawa crest), arrow mon. Animal mon do exist, but are far less popular than animals were in Western heraldry.

On the dress of the rulling class, the mon could be found on the kimono on both breasts, on both sleeves, and in the middle of the back ; on the armour, on kabuto, on the do, flags, and at other various places ; and more generally on coffers, tents, fans, and all items of some importance.

Virtually all modern Japanese families have a mon
