Word explanation

Neuro cybernetics is a compound word of 'neuro', regarding to the common biological way to convey information within a organism by means of nerves, and cybernetics - the science of communication and automatic control systems in relation to both machines and living beings.

Therefore neuro cybernetics, as the combination of both sciences, is a science that covers the integration of machines into the organism of a living being by realizing a intercommunication between the nervous system and artificial appliances. The best example for applied neuro cybernetics are the well known androids from various science fiction concepts. So far neuro cybernetics is on the verge of major breakthroughs, but active research is still very much ongoing, and much basic research is required in order to make neuro-cybernetics/bio-cybernetics a comprehensive and fundamental science.

The paractical applications, once the science has evolved far enough, are countless but one especially remarkable would be prostheses that integrate seemlessly into the human organisms, by relaying information provided by an artificial skin indirectly to the nervous strings of the respective body part. Indirectly due to the fact that a converter has to preprocess the information and translate it via a synaptic bridge into information that is usable to the nervous system of the living being.

Introduction

The capacity of computers to cope with massive amounts of information and interface with each other with very low latencies is continually increasing. The current efforts in the striving to advance human-computer interface technologies resulted in devices such as [VR] gloves, various kind of motion trackers as well as 3-D sound and graphic based systems. Those devices are capable of enhancing our ability to interact, along with novel approaches to user-interface-design, with vast amount of information in as natural way as possible, so that we don't get overstrained. The next emerging paradigm of human-machine interaction are directly sensing bio-electric signals (from eye, muscle, the brain or any other nervous source) as inputs and rendering information in ways that take advantage of psycho-physiologic signal processing of the human nervous system (perceptual psychophysics).

After that the next step would be to optimize the technology to the physiology, that is a biologically responsive interactive interface.

The Research

The ultimate goal of NC research is the technological implementation of major principles of information processing in biological organisms. To unravel the biological design principles, computer aided analyses of neuronal structure and signal transmission based on modern information theories and engineering methods are employed.

The present research aims at probing cellular and network mechanisms of brain functions. Arthropod animals show varieties of adaptive behavior despite having only a tiny brain ("Microbrain") that comprises a much smaller number of neurons than our "megalobrain". We investigate major principles of information processing in the brain using insects and crustaceans. Our main research projects are to

  • elucidate the role of internal thermal noise in the mechanosensory system in crickets
  • elucidate olfactory coding mechanisms in higher order centers in cockroaches;
  • clarify mechanisms of neuronal plasticity by investigating the role of nitric oxide in the central nervous system in crayfish
