Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax

The Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax is a 4th or 3rd Century BCE Greek periplus. The name Scylax is thought to be an appeal to authority: Herodotus (4.14) mentions a Scylax of Caryanda, a Carian navigator who explored the coast of the Indian Ocean on behalf of the Persians]].

Pseudo-Scylax takes a clockwise circumnavigation of the Mediterranean and Black Sea, starting in Iberia and ending in West Africa, beyond the Pillars of Hercules. The African section is clearly sourced from the Periplus of Hanno the Navigator.
