Photoelectrochemical cellA photoelectrochemical cell uses electromagnetic radiation including visible light to produce hydrogen, in a similar way to electrolysis of water. A cell consists of a semiconducting photoanode and metal cathode immersed in an electrolyte. When the anode is irradiated with EM radiation, electrolysis of the water to hydrogen and oxygen gas occurs. This has been suggested as a way of converting solar energy into a transportable form, namely hydrogen.
