Ragnarok Battle Offline

Ragnarok Battle Offline is a Doujin Game for Windows created by French-Bread based on the MMORPG Ragnarok Online.

The game is a side-scrolling beat 'em up with some RPG elements. You create a character from one of 6 basic classes (plus one unlockable class), add points to their stats, give them some skills and then enter one of the 8 stages (plus one bonus stage). Up to 3 people can play at once, using the keyboard or joysticks/gamepads. The classes are as follows:

  • Acolyte - Has healing and stat-increasing spells.
  • Archer - Does a lot of damage with arrow-based attacks
  • Magician - Has high damage spells, but lacks defence
  • Merchant - It's attacks are based on the amount of money it has
  • Swordman - A basic physical attacker
  • Thief - Fast moving, relies on combos and evasion
  • Novice - A secret "joke" class. Very low powered, very low defence.

You can create a Novice if you finish the game with a character from each of the other 6 classes. Each class has a male and female version which have slightly different attacks.

Playing the game involves entering a stage and fighting your way to the end, killing all the monsters along the way. Each stage is based on a different part of the Ragnarok universe, and has a fixed progression of enemies and special encounters that must be passed before the stage is won. At the end of the stage, or if the character loses all their lives, experience points are awarded. At set levels of experience the character will gain a level, giving them additional points to spend on skills and status increases.

Fighting involves using the skills they have bought and skills based on their stats. The commands to activate skills are similar to Street Fighter and it's like.
