For the village in Yorkshire, England see Tong, Yorkshire.
Tong has become part of the English language in the US. It is the Cantonese transliteration of the Chinese character 堂, which is "Tang" (táng) in Mandarin. It usually means a clandestine Chinese secret society (see Tong war). However it could also mean a place where extended family meet, 廟堂.
Tong (堂) is also a rare Chinese surname. However, Tong is often used as transliteration of other more common Chinese surnames, such as 董, 唐, 湯 etc.
