U.S. presidential election, 1816The U.S. presidential election of 1816 was a competition between James Monroe and Rufus King. As Secretary of State under James Madison, Monroe was seen by many as pre-ordained to succeed him into the presidency. King, twice defeated as the Federalist nominee for Vice President, returned to seek the nation's highest office.
