USS Republic (NCC-1371)

In the Star Trek fictional universe, the USS Republic, NCC-1371 was a Federation Starship that was in service in the mid-23rd century. Like the Enterprise, she was a Constitution class starship.

As an ensign, James T. Kirk was posted to the Republic for advanced training. He served with his friend Ben Finney. Finney made the mistake of leaving a reactor circuit open, which might have destroyed the entire ship if left open. Kirk found the open circuit, and logged the error. As a result, Finney was denied promotion, and did not advance through the ranks as fast as Kirk. Finney blamed Kirk for many years, and eventually suffered a mental breakdown.

By the mid-24th century, the Republic was a training vessel for Starfleet Academy. By the time of the Dominion War, the vessel had not left the Sol system in over 50 years. It is debatable whether or not this was the same Republic on which Captain Kirk served, or if this ship was named in honor of that vessel.

An episode of the prequel series, Star Trek: Enterprise, "Affliction ", revealed that another starship of the name Republic was in service in the mid-22nd century, although this was evidently not a vessel of the same class as the Warp 5 vessels Enterprise NX-01 or Columbia NX-02.

Although the Republic is listed as a Constitution class starship, some non-canon sources have listed the ship as a Baton Rouge class ship.

In the non-canon Star Trek: 25th Anniversary computer game, the Republic is featured as a ship that the player would engage in war games at the beginning of the game. During the last part of the game, the Republic was destroyed by the Vardaine.
