USS The Sullivans (DD-537)
The first USS The Sullivans (DD-537) is a Fletcher-class destroyer. The ship is named in honor of the five Sullivan brothers—George, Francis, Eugene, Madison, and Albert, aged 19 to 29—who lost their lives when their ship, USS Juneau, was sunk by a Japanese submarine in November 1942 in the Battle of the Solomon Islands . This was the greatest sacrifice by any one family during World War II. There was another The Sullivans; see USS The Sullivans (DDG-68).
