Peter Parker alias Spider-Man

Peter Parker is 15 years old when the story starts in Ultimate Spider-Man #1. He is an intelligent but shy student at Midtown High School and is frequently ostracized. Peter lost his parents in a plane crash and lives in Forest Hills, Queens, New York City, in the house of Uncle Ben and Aunt May Parker.

On a field trip to leading global manufacture Osborn Industries, a genetically altered spider bit Peter and caused a highly toxic reaction. But instead of dying, Peter inherited the spider's amazing abilities: the ability to cling onto walls, strength, agility, super-keen reflexes and a sixth sense warning him of danger, aka "Spider-Sense".

At first, he used his powers selfishly to earn money. He let a burglar run past him because he could not care less, allowing him to kill Uncle Ben in a holdup. Wracked with guilt, Peter learned the invaluable lesson "with great power comes great responsibility" and dedicated his life to fight crime.

Peter succeeded into transforming a glue his late father, geneticist Richard "Ray" Parker, created into a multifunctional adhesive. The "Spider Web" was born, allowing him to shoot web strands to swing between walls and to cover opponents with a thick carpet of web.

Peter had to learn balancing between being a full-time high school student, fighting crime as Spider-Man, making money as a web designer for the “Daily Bugle” (a fictitious newspaper), and spending time with his girlfriend Mary Jane Watson.

Main allies

Aunt May Parker is a strong and independent woman in her fifties. She refused to be destroyed by the death of her husband Ben and is a pillar of strength for Peter. Although being slightly overprotective of her nephew, she takes no guff with her nephew's secretive behavior. Aunt May is also quite good with computers and likes to search things on the Internet.

Uncle Ben Parker was the late husband of Aunt May. He was a gentle, intelligent man and told Peter the immortal words “with great power comes great responsibility” before he was killed by a burglar.

Mary Jane Watson, aka MJ, or just Mary, is a beautiful redhead who is good friends with Liz Allan and the girlfriend of Peter Parker. Unlike the original MJ, Ultimate Mary Jane is smart and sensitive and expresses her true feelings instead of masquerading as a party girl. She wears simple clothes and wears little makeup. She was the second person to learn of Peter's secret identity and the only person who Peter revealed it to.She then took to being his sole confidant. She sews Peter's spare Spider-man costumes, calling herself the Betsy Ross of the superheroes. However during the 2nd coming of the Green Goblin Mary jane was thrown off of the Queensboro bridge. The incident and her father's abuse had great impact on her relationship with Peter and they broke up for a time. Then Gwen Stacy died and it distanced them both, Peter blew off their fancy date and was being Spider-man more than ever.

Gwen Stacy was the late friend of Peter and Mary Jane after transfering to Midtown High. Between her father's constant work as a police captain and her mother's abandonment, Gwen was left in a self-depricating attitude and even considered suicide. Her life took a turn for the worse when her father was killed by a criminal that donned a Spider-Man suit and inadvertantly blaimed the real Spider-Man for his death. When Gwen's mother refused to take her in, Aunt May decided to adopt the troubled girl and she moved into Peter's home. After discovering Peter's secret during his fight with Doctor Octopus on the set of the Spider-Man movie and nearly shooting Peter with her father's gun, Gwen discovered the truth and reconciled with Peter. When all seemed to be looking up in her life, Gwen was unexpectedly killed by Carnage, a freakish organism accidently created by Dr. Curt Connors while experimenting with Peter's mutated DNA, her life-force sucked out of her while the creature took the form of Peter's face as she died.

The Daily Bugle staff

Peter works at the Daily Bugle newspaper as a web designer to earn some money.

J. Jonah Jameson, aka JJJ, is the editor-in-chief of the Daily Bugle. He hates Spider-Man with a passion. For him, true heroes are like his son John Jameson, an astronaut who was killed in space, and not vigilantes like Spider-Man. But he is a principled journalist and ironically very much likes Peter.

Betty Brant is Jameson’s secretary. Unlike the original , she doesn't play a prominent role.

Robert “Robbie” Robertson is Jameson’s right hand and the voice of reason when his superior’s anti-Spider-Man rhetoric becomes too sharp.

Ben Urich is Jameson’s elite reporter.he wrote a series of articles that helped take down the Kingpin.

Supporting cast

Liz Allen is Mary-Jane Watson’s best friend. She hates mutants because an uncle of hers had super-powers that killed him.

Jean DeWolff is a police Captain of the NYPD.

Nick Fury is the head of SHIELD. He wants Peter to join the Ultimates when he is an adult. Tough and powerful, Peter fears him more than he likes him.

Kong, aka King Kong, is an obese but strong peer of Peter’s. He is Flash Thompson’s best friend and double-teams with him to pick on Peter, but is quite likable when he is alone.

George Stacy was a hard-nosed Captain for the NYPD whose marriage failed. He (supposedly) had romantic feelings for Aunt May, but was killed by a Spider-Man copycat thief when he heroically saved a child's life(like in the original comic.). He was the father of Gwen Stacy.

Flash Thompson is a good-looking but unfeeling bully who takes pleasure in torturing Peter and seems to have all the luck with girls. He had romantic feelings about Gwen Stacy before she was killed.

Major villains

Featured here are villains who were Peter’s key adversaries in an Ultimate Spider-Man arc.

Carnage was a vampiric monster, created when Dr. Curt Conners experimented on Peter Parker’s blood. Originally only a sample in a test tube, the fetus grew into a soulless monster. Needing the life force of others to constantly repair his damaged DNA matrix, he killed Gwen Stacy. Carnage was mercy-killed by Peter who threw him down an industrial chimney.

Kingpin, aka Wilson Fisk, is the head of New York corporate crime. He is a giant with deadly strength, a ruthless mobster and notorious for bribing his way out of prosecution. However, he desires one thing he cannot buy: the health of his comatose wife Vanessa Fisk.

Kraven the Hunter is Sergei Kravinoff, the Russian-born Australian host of his own action reality show. He wanted to kill Spider-Man to boost his ratings. After his defeat, he genetically tampered with his DNA to become a gruesome werewolf-like monster.

Doctor Octopus, aka Dr. Otto Octavius, is one of Norman Osborn's elite scientists. He worked with four cybernetic arms strapped to his waist which allowed him to manipulate hazardous items from a distance. In the same explosion that turned Osborn into the Green Goblin, the four arms were permanently welded onto his flesh. He was defeated twice by Spider-Man and at last had his octopus arms removed and destroyed by Nick Fury himself.

The Green Goblin is Norman Osborn, the unscrupulous tycoon of chemistry firm Oscorp . He developed an experimental power-enhancing drug named OZ and treated spiders with it. He witnessed that one of them bit Peter and supercharged his metabolism. Osborn set up a lab to inject OZ into his body. The experiment misfired and changed him into an insane, near-invincible green monster.

Venom is Eddie Brock Jr., an intelligent, but irresponsible university student who was Peter's childhood friend. He is son of Eddie Brock Sr., long-time collaborator of Peter's father on an experimental power-increasing balm, codenamed Venom. Eddie came in contact with Venom, became a super-strong black monster and lost his sanity. He was gunned down by the police and has been missing ever since.

Hobgoblin is Harry Osborn, the troubled son of Norman Osborn.Rejected and ignored by his father, whom he cared for deeply, was very upset when Iron Man shot him. He blamed Spider-man for the incident. Disturbed by witnessing the death of his father (who is actually in cryogenics at SHIELD) and seeing his girlfriend Mary Jane Watson fall for Peter Parker , Harry, with the help of his father's assistant Shaw, Transforms into the Hobgoblin to get revenge and issue 75 ends with Harry transforming into the Hobgoblin.

Other villains

Featured here are villains who appeared in Ultimate Spider-Man, but either as a sidekick of a major villain (e.g. the Enforcers) or as a villain with no agenda who just came across Spider-Man (e.g. Justin Hammer).

The Black Cat is Felicia Hardy, a young woman who blames her father’s death on Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin. Taking revenge, she stole and destroyed a priceless artifact in front of his eyes that he was going to use on his comatose wife and was seemingly killed by Elektra.

Electro gained his powers from Justin Hammer 's tampering. He was one of Kingpin’s hitmen. He Joined the Ultimate Six.

Elektra is Greek-born ninja Elektra Natchios. She became the elite assassin of Kingpin after the Enforcers and Electro left. She stabbed Felicia Hardy with her Sai and seemingly killed her.

The Enforcers were a quartet of mastermind "Mr. Big" Frederick Foswell, lasso-wielding "Montana” Bale, strongman "Ox" Bruno Sanchez and gunslinger "Fancy Dan" Rubinstein. They were Kingpin’s hitmen until they were twice defeated by Spider-Man. Foswell was murdered by Wilson Fisk himself after failing to protect him from Spider-Man.

Justin Hammer was a wealthy corporate criminal, specializing in illegal genetic tampering. He died of a heart attack when he was attacked by Dr. Octopus.

Lizard The lizard isn't really a monster, just an accident. Curt Conners first used lizard's dna to regrow his arm, which instead, turned him into a giant lizard like monster.

Sandman is Flint Marko, a highly criminal person who was transformed into a sand monster by illegal genetic tampering.

Additionally, The Punisher, the Rhino and the Shocker appeared as villains in cameo roles.
