Virginia Department of TransportationThe Virginia Department of Transportation, or VDOT, is the government agency responsible for building, maintaining and operating Virginia's roads, bridges and tunnels. It is overseen by the Commonwealth Transportation Board, which has the power to fund airports, seaports, rail and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country, just behind North Carolina and Texas. VDOT's annual budget for Fiscal Year 2004-2005 was $2.8 billion. About 46 percent of allocations went to roadway maintenance, 29 percent went to highway systems construction and the rest went to debt service, operations, payments to other agencies, administration, special financing and earmarks. It has around 9,300 employees, making it one of the three largest state agencies in Virginia. External links
