A volvulus is a loop of bowel that has twisted on itself, possibly resulting in loss of blood flow to part or all of the intestines (strangulation). This can result in the death (necrosis, gangrene) of the blood starved (ischemic ) tissue and requires immediate surgical intervention (jejunectomy , ileostomy, colostomy, bowel resection ).
Volvulus is more common in children than adults, and is the second leading cause of short bowel syndrome, following Crohn's disease.
