This station signed on in 1953 from the Congress Square Hotel in Downtown Portland, Maine. This location is responsible for part of the station's call letters (CSH). After the station outgrew the hotel, it moved across the street to where it is presently located. For a number of years, it was the flagship station in the Maine Broadcasting System, a collection of local radio and television concerns. In 1998, the Maine Broadcasting System was acquired by the Gannett Corporation, which pumped money into the station for cosmetic and equipment rennovations.
Today, it continues to produce the highest rated and most viewed local news programs in the state, "NewsCenter". The 5 AM, 12 PM, 5:30 PM, and 11 PM editions are broadcast statewide from this facility.
It is also a sister station to WLBZ-2 in Bangor.
WCSH is owned by Gannett Corporation.
