WFLA-TV (NewsChannel 8) is the NBC affiliate television station on the west coast of the U.S. state Florida serving the Tampa-St. Petersburg market. The station is owned by Media General and is currently first place in the Tampa news race at 6 & 11 p.m. Its transmitter is located in Riverview, Florida.
The station usually ranked second in ratings during the 1960s and 1970s behind rival WTVT, except during a tumultuous period in the 1980s when the station fell into third place. In 1989, WFLA would top WTVT for the first time since 1962 and continued to do so for much of the 1990s.
The station is buoyed by what is arguably one of the most popular local anchor teams in the United States, Bob Hite and Gayle Sierens .
