WNYA is the callsign of the Capital District's UPN affiliate. WNYA, otherwise known as UPN Capital Region, is broadcast on channels 51 and 15. Channel 51 has its transmitter located in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, while channel 15 (WNYA-CA) relays the signal from Albany, New York. The stations premiered on September 1, 2003, as the first UPN broadcast affiliate in the Capital District. Previously, UPN had been available only through Time Warner Cable as UPN4. Coincidentally, most cable companies carry the new station on cable channel 4. WNYA is operated by WRGB through a local marketing agreement (LMA). In fact, the former broadcasts coverage of the U.S. Open tennis tournament on Labor Day Weekend because of the latter's involvement with airing the Jerry Lewis MDA telethon during that time.
