Your mom

Your mom (also seen in spelling variants, such as Yo mamma or in British versions Your mum) is a very specific form of crude joke, also known as the dozens or snapping, consisting of an exaggerated characteristic being attributed to the target's mother, usually pertaining to an often erroneous weight problem, or a mental deficiency of some sort. In Britain, the jokes almost exclusively concentrate on questioning the sexual integrity of the target's mother. The intended result is to cause either shame or anger at the subject, by casting aspersions on his mothers character, thus evoking an Oedipal need to defend her.

While insults to mothers can be seen as quite harsh, in some usages these have lost their sting, or are even used ironically. The jokes are often seen as a feature of African American urban culture. The fact that these jokes are more prevalent in African American communities may be because of their matriarchal famIly structures where single mothers are often left to raise children.

"Your mom" jokes are also used as a riposte and oftentimes a counter-riposte to any insulting statement made. (e.g. "You're an idiot." "YOUR MOM is an idiot."). Nowadays, "your mom" jokes are being used for statements that have no intent of being hostile ("I love to eat ice cream." "YOUR MOM loves to eat ice cream."), or as a way to cleverly skew another person's words ("Ramen noodles are cheap and easy." "YOUR MOM is cheap and easy.").

Alternative hip hop group The Pharcyde released a song on their debut album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde entitled "Yo Mama", the lyrics of which consisted entirely of "your mom" jokes.

"Your face" is a common substitute for "your mom."
